Public Relations Qualifications

Education
A college degree is often a required qualification for a career in public relations. A wide variety of bachelors degree programs can provide a good foundation for public relations, such as public relations, journalism, communications, marketing, English, or business. Your education should focus on courses in psychology, public speaking, advertising, public affairs, business administration, political science, and creative and technical writing. Many public relations professionals continue on in their education by earning a masters degree in public relations or journalism. After landing a public relations job, you may be required to complete additional training in order to learn the rules and guidelines of your company's public relations team.

Abilities
It helps for individuals in public relations to have a personable and outgoing personality. You will certainly need excellent written and verbal communication skills. Your writings and speeches will be the voice of your organization. Most people in public relations also have strong sales and marketing skills. Being well-organized, innovative, and able to remain calm and productive under looming deadlines are other valuable qualifications for public relations work.

Experience
Public relations jobs can get pretty competitive, so work experience will be an important addition to your resume. Many college programs offer internship opportunities as a part of the curriculum. Internships, summer jobs, or part-time work can all be great ways to gain valuable experience while still in school. After you've gained at least five of professional experience in public relations, you will be eligible to earn accreditation by the Public Relations Society of America.
