Chef Qualifications

Education
There are no formal educational qualifications to become a chef. Many chefs do pursue a culinary degree, either through a two-year associates program or a more advanced higher-level degree. Alternately, some people work up through the food service ranks and supplement their experience with professional cooking courses and training in food management and hygiene. Either way, it's a good idea to take at least a few formal culinary courses.

Abilities
A chef must have strong organizational and communication skills. The food industry can be fast paced and stressful. A chef needs to be able to function in a demanding and quickly changing environment. In order to adequately prepare a menu, a chef should be creative and imaginative as well as have a good head for math. Confidence, a strong work ethic, and practicality are all important qualities for a successful chef to possess. You should probably also be an outstanding cook.

Experience
Experience alone can potentially lead you to a career as a chef. Many chefs have gained the necessary qualifications by starting at the bottom and working their way up through the culinary system. However, you can expect this route to take awhile. A formal culinary education or apprenticeship can certainly help boost your job chances. Often culinary degree programs will provide you with valuable practical experience before graduation.
