Human Resources

Human Resources Qualifications

Education
Although some entry-level human resources jobs may not require a college degree, a bachelors degree is typically the minimum educational qualification to break into the field. You should obtain a degree in human resources or a related area such as organizational development, business administration, or industrial psychology. To prepare yourself for a career in human resources, coursework should include classes in compensation, recruitment, training and development, performance appraisal, principles of management, organizational structure, and industrial psychology. It is also beneficial to have a basic knowledge of labor law, collective bargaining, labor economics, and labor history. Human resources can be a competitive field. A masters degree in human resources or business administration (MBA) may be required to if you are looking to advance to a management position.

Abilities
Strong interpersonal skills are the most important qualification for a successful human resources professional. You will need to be an effective interviewer and mediator and comfortable communicating with people of diverse cultural, religious, and educational backgrounds. Human resources professionals need to demonstrate a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and fairness. You must be adept at research and keep informed of the latest developments in the field. Computer skills are also an essential skill qualification.

Experience
It often takes experience at an entry-level position before advancing to a position as a human resources generalist or manager. Past managerial experience can sometimes qualify a person for a higher level position, as long as the applicant has completed some coursework in human resources or obtained a human resources certification. Valuable experience can be gained while still in school through internships or part-time work.
