IT Manager Qualifications

Education
A bachelors degree in computer science, information technology, information systems management, or a related field is the minimum qualification for any IT management position. Some jobs may require applicants to have obtained a masters degree in computer science or computer engineering. Due to the business and management aspect of being an IT manager, many potential candidates supplement their computer education with a masters in business administration (MBA). Many job listing include some management training among their required qualifications.

Abilities
IT managers must be well versed in all aspects of computer systems, communications systems, and software. Additionally, IT managers are in charge of managing personnel. You will be responsible for hiring, training, motivating, and disciplining employees. As a candidate for an IT management position, your business qualifications will be just as important as you computer qualifications. You should also have excellent communication skills, both in speaking with your team and reporting to your managers.

Experience
Along with extensive educational qualifications, you will need several years of experience in computer programming, systems analysis, software engineering, and data administration before you might be considered for an IT management position. Companies will also be looking for candidate with experience in their specific industry. Many companies prefer to hire managers from within the organization to ensure that their management team is already familiar with their operating systems. You may be initially hired at a more entry-level position in order to learn the ropes before promotion to management.
