Computer Technician Qualifications

Education
While a high school diploma or equivalent may be the only formal educational qualification for computer technicians, this is rarely enough to secure a job. The most common route is through an associates degree program or certification at a technical or community college. You will learn the basics of computer technology and electronics as well as computer installation and maintenance. Some college programs may also expose you to networking, digital logic, and microprocessor troubleshooting. Higher level careers may require a bachelors degree in computer science or electronics.

Abilities
Most computer technicians have an inherent love for figuring out home things work. Excellent problem solving skills are imperative for any successful computer technician. You must be able to find solutions in an efficient and timely manner. Most businesses depend on their computer systems to be up and running in order for work to go on, so your job as a computer technician will be an important part of the team. The job can sometimes get stressful, so you should be able to work patiently and effectively under pressure.

Experience
Many future computer technicians begin by taking apart computers and other home electronics as a teenager. Any chance you have to learn more about computers and how they work will be beneficial to your future career. Computers and technology are always advancing, so working as a computer technician is a process of constant learning. Your success will depend on your ability to continue your education and advance your knowledge of emerging technologies.
