Hotel Manager Qualifications

Education
You can become a hotel manager with no more than a high school diploma or equivalent, but a college degree can make it a lot easier to get a job in the industry and move up to a management position. Some larger hotels require their manager to have earned a bachelors degree in hotel or hospitality management and even smaller hotels may list at least an associates degree or certification among their qualifications. Hotel management degree and certification programs typically include courses in business administration, accounting, economics, marketing, housekeeping, maintenance and food and beverage management.

Abilities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a key component to being a successful hotel manager. You will need to be able to address guest concerns, deal with problems, organize and motivate hotel staff, and report to hotel owners. Mangers need to be adept at problem-solving and delegation of responsibilities. It is your job to make sure every aspect of the hotel runs smoothly. Additional qualifications include knowledge of sales and marketing, accounting, human resources, and computer systems.

Experience
Few people begin as a hotel manager directly out of college. You will probably need to prove your worth and qualifications through on-the-job experience. Many hotel owners want their future managers to experience every level of the hotel experience before promoting them to a management position. Part-time work, summer jobs, and internships while still in school can go a long way to jumpstart your hotel management career after graduation.
