Dance Teacher Qualifications

Education
Qualifications for becoming a dance teacher depend on whether you're looking to teach at a public school, private studio, or a college or university. Public education dance teachers are required to have a bachelors degree in fine arts with a concentration in dance. Coursework will generally include classes in dance history, technique, production, kinesiology (the study of human movement), improvisation, performance, and teaching theory. Licensure is also required by most states. Training obtained through a professional dance organizations can lead to the qualifications needed to become a teacher at a private studio, but not a public institution. To teach at the college level, you must earn a masters degree in dance.

Abilities
To teach, you must have a true passion for the art of dance. The best dance teachers are severely dedicated to advancing their own dance skills and instilling this knowledge in others. You should have a breadth of knowledge of various dance styles and a mastery of several different techniques. Dance teachers should be patient, attentive, and able to communicate clearly with students.

Experience
Your experience as a teacher can begin with your own instruction. Study not only your instructor's dance techniques but also pay attention to their teaching methods and interaction with students. In order to have gained the qualifications to become a successful dance teacher, you should have years of experience training, dancing, and performing.
