Math Teacher Qualifications

Education
A bachelors degree is the minimum qualification for becoming a math teacher. You can either pursue a bachelors degree in education with a minor in math or a degree in mathematics with a minor in education. Many schools also offer education programs with a specific emphasis on mathematics. The education side of your degree program will include classes in child and educational psychology, introductory education, and the use of technology in the classroom. Math course will cover algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. If you already have a degree in mathematics, you can become qualified through a two-year masters degree in education program. All states require math teachers to become licensed, though the qualifications vary by state. Your license can be obtained with a specific focus on mathematics.

Abilities
Aside from being fond of math and having a good head for numbers, math teachers need to possess excellent instructional skills. You will need to be able to engage your students in the learning process and adjust your lessons for each student's needs. Good communication skills, both speaking and listening, are essential. You will also need patience, understanding, and dedication. Teaching can be a very rewarding career, but some days will be difficult.

Experience
Student teaching is an important part of most teacher education programs. Most colleges teaching programs partner with local schools to allow you to gain valuable experience in a real classroom setting. Your student teaching experience will begin with observation of an experienced teacher and progress to the formation of your own lesson plans and culminate in supervised instruction.
