Electrical Engineering Qualifications

Education
The minimum qualification for an electrical engineering career in generally a bachelors degree. Electrical engineering degree programs focus on courses in mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, and communications. You will be trained in topics such as circuits, electronics, digital design, and microprocessors. Leadership positions often require either a masters degree or doctorate. Practicing engineers at all levels must obtain professional certification. Continuing education courses are often required in order to maintain licensure.

Abilities
Aspiring electrical engineers should have a strong interest in mathematics and science. Successful engineers have a highly logical mind, a head for numbers, good management skills, and are very detail oriented. You should also be curious about how things work and have a creative attitude towards problem solving. Qualified electrical engineers must be able to function well both on their own and as part of a larger team effort.

Experience
Practical experience is an important asset to any potential employer. The best way to gain the qualifications you'll need and prepare yourself for the workforce is to take advantage of internship opportunities while still enrolled in college.
